Hi, all! I discovered the Odd Fellows and the Rebekahs while researching the symbols on my great grandparents' headstones, and have been interested ever since. It sounds like an organization I'd love to be a part of. I live in Alaska, though, and while my googling has turned up two Rebekah lodges in the state, neither is near enough for me to be a part of.
I'm headed to Washington (state) in a couple of weeks and am thinking of contacting someone to find out more while I'm there - I actually fly down to the Seattle area more frequently than I get to Fairbanks or Ketchikan (the two Alaskan lodges I found). I just sort of wondered whether there would be any point to joining now, or if I would even be able to. Are there ways for isolated members to be active?

It is election day in the USA
I may not agree on the issues with the various people who can or will read this.
I care more about everyone eligible exercising their right to vote.
Please vote today. (well, if you have not already)
It is only a democracy if people (demos) participate. Current Mood: hopeful

Now, I could see this being argued for and against. On one side it is no real more networking than if you were a member of any other group, like the sca
. On the other hand some could see this as 'mercenary motives' and actually giving credence to the conspiracy theories that all oddfellows
are in cahoots. Personally I see it as a more prominent way to list my group affiliations than jsut having them in my profile under 'interests'. Then again I do not really use the site for much.

from a list I am on
One of the oddfellows
lists that I am on recently had these messages on it.( message 1Collapse )( message 2Collapse )
I am guessing that more than one person here has seen these lists or a variation of them at some point. Maybe you have recognized the people these lists are talking about. Maybe you are one of these people. I think these go hand in hand with the 'Ten Master Mason' poem about how to revitalize a Lodge. I guess my question for the Brethren assembled here is: what have you done that worked? Do you think that it could be implemented in another Lodge? What else are you looking to do that people could assist you with?

BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER
BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER
Be an active member,
The kind that would be missed:
Don't be just contented
That your name is on the list.
Do attend the meetings
And mingle with the crowd:
Don't stay at home
And crab both long and loud.
Do take an active part
To help the lodge along.
And take time out to visit
A member who is sick.
Don't leave the work for just a few
And gripe about the clique
There is quite a program scheduled
That means success if done,
And it can be accomplished
With the help of everyone.
So Attend the meetings regularly
And help with hand and heart,
Be an active member
And take an active part.
Think this over, Member
Are we Right or are we Wrong?
Be an Active Member
Don't just belong

I thought this was appropriate
I received the following from a member of my Lodge:
"On December 14 at noon the project "wreaths across america" will be placing 5 wreaths - one for each brach of military service - at the National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts.
I am posting for all the veterans I know to inform them just in case they would like to attend.
To learn more about this project go to http://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/
Given that the oddfellows
place the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown soldier I figure it is in keeping with the spirit of the group to post this here.
